The Royal Hotel is recognised as the island’s biggest luxury hotel. It originally was built as a luxurious coach house on the edge of the village of Ventnor, built to accommodate the royals during their visits there. The original building was built by a man called John Hardie, who also added the staircase that you can still see today. Today the Royal is run by the current owners, the Hardie and Tonbridge PLC. They have kept the old charm that the original building had, but have made every effort to modernise the hotel for the modern traveller.
